Welcome to Greenwich Hospital’s Greenwich Market Consultation Website.

Greenwich Hospital is a Crown Charity which owns a large proportion of Greenwich Town Centre, including the Island Site, the market area and further public houses, retail, residential and leisure properties. The area is bounded by Romney Road, Nelson Road, Greenwich Church Street, the river and Eastney Street. The Hospital also owns the freehold of the Old Royal Naval College.

As a responsible landlord we are committed to the good stewardship of our estate in Greenwich and appreciate the need to regenerate and improve the properties. In particular we recognise the need to invest in the Island Site, including the market. Over the coming months we want to understand the views of everyone who lives or works in the area as part of a process of consultation over plans for the future of the Island Site.

In April 2007 we set up a Key Stakeholder Consultative Group under the chairmanship of Nick Raynsford MP, with representatives of Greenwich Hospital, the London Borough of Greenwich, the Greenwich Foundation, the National Maritime Museum, the Town Centre Traders, the market managers, the residents, the Chamber of Commerce, Greenwich Peninsula Partnership and the Greenwich Society. The purpose of the Group is to discuss the regeneration of the Island Site and provide views from a wide spectrum of people and organisations with an interest in the Hospital’s properties in Greenwich.

Since April 2007 the Group has been looking at and commenting upon various options for the Island Site. These options have been the subject of extensive public consultation including public exhibitions in October 2007 and April 2009, seven newsletters and the establishment of a Community Liaison Group.

Greenwich Hospital submitted the planning application for the regeneration of Greenwich Market to Greenwich Council and on 26 August Greenwich Council determined not to approve the plans for the market regeneration. This was a very disappointing outcome for the Hospital, particularly as the planning officers had recommended the scheme for approval.

In February 2010, after careful consideration, Greenwich Hospital lodged an Appeal with the Planning Inspectorate on their market regeneration plans. The Planning Inspectorate will now consider the application in September 2010 and make an independent determination.

I hope you will find the contents of this website informative.

Yours faithfully,

Martin Sands
