As part of Greenwich Hospital’s public consultation on the regeneration of Greenwich Market, the Hospital is considering the livelihoods of those who work in and around the market and how the market would trade during a two-year construction period. For this reason, the Hospital is considering a temporary relocation of the market and has set up a Community Liaison Group to address the implications for the Greenwich community.
In initial soundings with market stallholders and other members of the immediate community it became clear that the temporary relocation of the market to a marquee-style structure on Cutty Sark Gardens would be an appropriate solution to enable the market to flourish close to Greenwich Market whilst building work is undertaken. After two meetings of the Community Liaison Group and in consultation with Greenwich Council it became clear that Cutty Sark Gardens was not a practical solution, and the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College eventually became the preferred option.
The purpose of the Community Liaison Group is to be a forum for market retailers and stallholders, residents’ representatives, community leaders and other key stakeholders to:
- Be kept up to date about the Hospital’s plans for the regeneration of Greenwich Market and its temporary relocation
- Discuss issues about the temporary location for the market and the proposed structure and facilities
- Discuss issues relating to how the temporary market might operate.
The intended membership of the Group will include residents’ representatives from the Meridian Estate, College Approach, Greenwich Church Street and King William Walk; town centre traders and market stallholders; representatives of local key stakeholder organisations, such as the Cutty Sark Trust, Greenwich Pier, the Old Royal Naval College, the University of Greenwich, the Trinity College of Music and Trafalgar Quarters; the market operators and other experts who are advising the Hospital. Meetings of the Group will be hosted by Greenwich Hospital and chaired by the project director from NB Real Estate.
