Greenwich Hospital held a public exhibition so that members of the community could view the proposals for the market and give their feedback.  The exhibition was held at 3-4 Nelson Road, Greenwich on Friday 5 October 2007 from 2pm to 8pm and Saturday 6 October 2007 from 12 noon to 8pm.

Members of the project team were at the exhibition to answer questions.  The information presented at the exhibition is also available on this web page.

Greenwich Hospital thanks all who attended the public exhibition, viewed it online and submitted their comments and opinions. The feedback will be analysed for review at the next Key Stakeholder Consultative Group meeting on 19 November 2007.

The Proposed Scheme

Overall design
The size and shape of the existing market would stay and there would be a new roof at a higher level than the current roof to make the market feel brighter and more open.  Those of the existing buildings inside the Island Site that date from the 1950’s would be replaced and there would be a new market building, with permanent stalls at ground floor level.

Historic Buildings
Historic buildings inside the Island Site, including those in Turnpin Lane and the Coach and Horses pub would remain.  The frontage along King William Walk  would be returned to its former glory, with the post-war replacement buildings being rebuilt to match the rest of King William Walk. The buildings around the site that face College Approach, Greenwich Church Street and Nelson Road would stay as they are.

plan

The Market
The market itself would be central to the scheme (A). It will be larger and will have improved flooring throughout, to make it easier for visitors to move around and for stallholders to set up stalls.  There would be secure first floor storage areas on the first floor of the new market buildings, accessed by goods lifts (B).

Market Buildings and Shops
The buildings inside the Island Site would be rebuilt and reconfigured around the market area (C,D,E). There would be shops on the ground floor of these new buildings, so that the market stalls would be surrounded by shops, as they are today.  The building on the east of the market, which dates from the 1950’s, would be replaced with a modern interpretation of the existing building (C).  The building to the west of the market will be built further back, into the car park yard beside Durnford Street, which is currently used for storage (D).

New Market Building
There would be a new market building at the end of Durnford Street (E) with increased space at ground floor level for permanent stalls.

New Roof
A new roof would give the market a brighter and more joyful feel. It would be higher than the existing roof and will make the market feel more spacious (A).
The roof would extend over the whole of the market (A) and around the new market building (E).

Hotel on King William Walk
Four of the houses on King William Walk are post-war additions, which replaced buildings damaged during the war. These would be rebuilt in the style of the Grade 2 listed buildings along the rest of the street (F).  A small hotel (possibly a “boutique” hotel) would be built in the replacement buildings along King William Walk (F), with additional bedrooms on upper floors above the market shops (C, E).

New Pedestrian and Delivery Routes into the Market
There would be new access routes into the market from King William Walk and Greenwich Church Street to draw visitors in from the DLR and King William Walk (G).  There would be a route for delivery and emergency vehicles through the new buildings along Durnford Street.

Hotel The new hotel would increase hotel capacity in Greenwich and encourage overnight stays and visitors to spend longer in the town centre. Entrances would be on King William Walk and in the market area.  There would be additional bedrooms on upper floors of the new market buildings. The hotel will attract visitors to spend more time in the market and Greenwich town centre.

Electoral Reform Services Exhibition Report

Electoral Reform Services (ERS) were commissioned to write an independent report that analyses the public feedback received at the Public Exhibition. To view the full report published by ERS click here.

What will happen next?

Following the exhibition the design team will consider your comments and opinions from the feedback forms on the proposed scheme. They will be used to help improve the plans for the Market and the Island Site.  Greenwich Hospital hopes to submit its plans for the regeneration of Greenwich Market to Greenwich Council in spring 2008.
